A Dad’s Perspective on the Bugaboo Butterfly: The Ultimate Travel Buggy

As a frequent traveler and parent, I know the challenges of managing family trips with a toddler in tow. The right stroller can make or break your experience, especially for air travel. For car trips, you don’t want a buggy taking up the entire trunk.

After researching and owning a few other strollers, I chose the Bugaboo Butterfly. It’s sleek, sturdy, and compact – though on the pricier side, it pays off with durability and convenience. Plus, it has a high resale value. This travel buggy doesn’t just cater to moms; it’s also dad-approved!
Keep reading to find out why this buggy stood out and why I ditched my others.

Design and Build Quality

When it comes to looks, the Bugaboo Butterfly strikes a great balance between style and practicality. It doesn’t feel flimsy or weak like some other travel buggies. As a dad, I appreciate the durable frame, which feels like it can withstand the rough and tumble of airport transfers and overhead bins. Whether it’s for a long trip or a quick weekend getaway, the Butterfly holds up well, especially when it gets pushed along with luggage into the trunk.

The overall build quality gives you confidence that it can handle everyday bumps, whether you’re navigating busy streets or walks in the nature. However, one downside I’ve noticed is that the footrest scratches easily. For a buggy at this price point, I expected it to be more resistant to wear and tear in this area.

Foldability and Portability

Here’s where the Bugaboo Butterfly really shines. It features a one-second fold, perfect for quickly packing it away. Whether you’re holding your kid or luggage in the other hand, the buggy folds down quickly and smoothly. Its lightweight design (just over 7 kg) makes it easy to lift and store in the overhead compartment of an airplane.

can bugaboo butterfly go on plane?

Yes – one important note for air travelers: the Bugaboo Butterfly folds down to 45x23x54 cm, while most EU airlines limit carry-on size to 40x20x55 cm. The width is slightly over the limit, so it sticks out a bit in the airline carry-on size cages, but I’ve personally had no issues carrying it onboard using the built-in shoulder strap. According to my experience Bugaboo Butterfly is cabin approved and is IATA approved as stated by Bugaboo.
Once on the plane, it fits easily into the overhead bin—no more waiting at the gate for your stroller to be returned or worse, tracking it down at baggage claim as I had to with my previous model. The shoulder strap makes a big difference in convenience for quick boarding and deplaning.

Comfort for the Little Ones

While my little one (14 months) can’t voice his opinion much, his comfort is key. The Bugaboo Butterfly features a padded, adjustable seat with variable recline positions. So, whether he’s napping or watching the hustle and bustle of the city, the buggy easily adapts.

The UPF 50+ canopy is another win – it extends to keep him shaded and protected, or creates a dark space when it’s nap time. Plus, there’s a zippered extension with a ventilation window for added airflow. One downside, though, is that the seat doesn’t recline fully flat, which could be better for naps.

Maneuverability

The Bugaboo Butterfly is impressively easy to handle, even with one hand. It glides effortlessly over city sidewalks, airport terminals, and uneven terrain, thanks to its four-wheel suspension that absorbs most bumps.

It’s narrow enough to navigate tight spaces (looking at you, airplane aisles and narrow European streets) but wide enough to keep my child stable and secure. While it doesn’t match the air tires of my previous buggy for unpaved roads, the Butterfly has still become my go-to choice for almost every situation.

Storage Space

I don’t carry a diaper bag, so I rely on decent storage for toys, snacks, and other essentials. The underseat basket on the Bugaboo Butterfly is surprisingly spacious for a travel buggy. It easily fits a small backpack and holds up to 8 kg of cargo, letting you pack everything you need without worrying about anything falling out.

On-the-Go Convenience

As a dad on the move, I appreciate the thoughtful details Bugaboo has included. For instance, the fabrics are easy to remove and clean, making it simple to tackle spills or unexpected messes. The seat liner is machine washable, which is a huge plus. Did I mention that all parts can be purchased individually? You can also get an adapter for popular infant carriers from brands like Cybex, Nuna, and Maxi-Cosi, making it a breeze to switch between your buggy and car at an early age.

There are plenty of other accessories available, but one downside is that the cup holder isn’t included.

Final Thoughts & Alternatives

Why a well known brand is worth it

Reflecting on my choices, there are a few things I would do differently. I started with a pram that offered a bassinet, which later changes to a buggy seat. I had to choose between the Bugaboo Fox and a lesser-known brand, and I ultimately went with the more affordable latter.
Now, I would opt for a well-known brand like Bugaboo. My previous pram was not only difficult to resell, in addition I sold it at a low price. Finding spare parts was a challenge – not just for repairs but also if you want to refresh your stroller (which I wanted to do for my second child).
I used the pram with the sport buggy seat for quite some time, but it was a hassle to transport in the car because it came in two pieces.

Which type of Buggy to pick?

Then, I got the Joie Litetrax, which was a game changer for me since it took up only half the space in my trunk. I used it for some air travels, but I had to leave it at the gate. More than once, it was checked in instead of being returned at the gate, meaning I had to carry my son while retrieving it from baggage claim. I even had to pick it up from the special luggage section after my suitcases. On one occasion, it got wet because of rain, and the lack of protection added inconvenience to my travels.

I considered the Xiaomi Stroller for a bit, since I’m very happy with their suitcases (read my 20″ Carry-On Aluminum Suitcase Review or 24″ Spinner Wheel Suitcase Review). I did my research and you can find my blog post including my friend’s review of the Xiaomi Stroller, but decided to go with the known stroller brand.

Xiaomi Stroller – folding travel buggy

I didn’t want to get another stroller, but here I am, and it was a great decision. Reducing trunk space again by half was more than a game changer, and taking the Bugaboo Butterfly on the plane is incredibly convenient. Leaving the stroller at the gate also means I have to remove everything from the storage basket and carry it in addition to my kids.

If I Could Start Over: What I Would Do Differently

Looking back, I would still get a decent pram with a bassinet for a newborn, as I enjoyed long walks during naptime and wanted a comfy bed with cozy covers for winter. However, I would switch to the Bugaboo Butterfly much earlier and therefore not pay much attention to the pram’s optional seat.

My first stroller purchase: Knorr Baby Stroller

We had both the Joie Litetrax and Bugaboo Butterfly next to our door for a while, and since getting the Butterfly, we haven’t used the other one again. The Joie Litetrax has its strengths, particularly when the air tires excel on nature walks or unpaved roads, but that benefit is quite limited. The Butterfly handles them adequately, and if the road gets too rough, you can’t use any stroller anyway.
I have to give credit to my wife – investing in the expensive Bugaboo Butterfly was worth every penny.

Xiaomi Aluminum Suitcase 20″ – Review

Xiaomi 20" Aluminum Suitcase

When it comes to travel, a reliable carry-on suitcase is essential. I’ve always admired the sleek design and durability of the Rimowa aluminum suitcase, but with a price tag of around $2000, it’s a out of my budget. That’s why I was thrilled to discover that Xiaomi offers a similar aluminum carry-on baggage for a fraction of the price. At under $300, it’s just a fifth of the cost of a Rimowa. Curious about this affordable alternative, I decided to give the Xiaomi aluminum suitcase a try.

Xiaomi 20″ Aluminum Suitcase – Specs

The Xiaomi aluminum suitcase measures 55.1 × 38.3 × 20.3 cm (22.7 x 15.1 x 8 in) and weighs approximately 4.2 kg (9.3 lbs). This makes it about the maximum size for carry-on luggage, though it is around 1 kg heavier than a typical polycarbonate suitcase. In terms of dimensions and weight, it’s comparable to the Rimowa aluminum suitcase.

Constructed from an aluminum-magnesium alloy, the suitcase’s body is both sturdy and stylish, while the interior is lined with polyester. With a capacity of about 31 liters, it offers enough space for your travel essentials.

Xiaomi aluminum carry-on features two locks, each with individual 3-number codes, and are TSA-approved. The pull rod has four adjustable positions and extends to a convenient height of 1.15 meters. Additionally, the rod’s shaking is minimal, within 10 mm, ensuring a smooth and comfortable pulling experience.

Although the aluminum suitcase is sold under the Xiaomi brand, it is actually manufactured by 90 Minutes. Inside, you’ll find a tag indicating that it was designed by Runmi in Germany. The suitcase features two Y-shaped straps with Velcro that won’t stick to your clothes, ensuring your items stay secure without any hassle. Additionally, it includes a flexible division board with a zipper, perfect for organizing chargers and other small items.

The Xiaomi 20″ aluminum suitcase qualifies as cabin baggage. During my wait at the airport, I tested it in several airlines’ measuring boxes, and it fit perfectly as a carry-on bag for all of them.
Here are some airline requirements (see my field test photos below):

  • Ryanair: 55 x 40 x 20 cm – 10kg
  • Wizzair: 55 x 40 x 23 cm – 10kg
  • EasyJet: 56 x 45 x 25 cm – ?kg
  • Austrian: 55 x 40 x 23 cm – 8kg
  • Lufthansa: 55 x 40 x 23 cm – 8kg
  • Vueling: 55 x 40 x 20 cm – 10kg

Inside the aircraft, I had the opportunity to test the Xiaomi aluminum suitcase on two types of planes. On an Airbus A320/A321, the suitcase fits perfectly alongside in the overhead compartment. On a smaller regional jet, the Embraer 195, the suitcase fits broadside.

Hands-on Experience & Review

After: 1 trip – 2 flights

Xiaomi Aluminum Suitcase - Field Test

After a trip with two flights, these are my findings: The wheels are super smooth and silent. No matter which terrain I was pulling my suitcase, it worked out fine. The shaking of the pulling rod is quite ok and comparable to other case I used.

While I appreciate the Y-shaped strap and the quality of the Velcro, closing it can be a bit inconvenient. You need to fumble the strap through a metal opening, which can be tricky if you’ve overpacked, as the Velcro part is too thick to fit easily.
Personally, I would prefer a strap on one side and a zipper compartment on the other, similar to the Xiaomi 20″ Business Suitcase (a polycarbonate suitcase):

Xiaomi 20" metal suitcase vs Xiaomi 20" Business suitcase

During my fist trip Xiaomi Suitcase took a few hits, got a few minor scratches, but still looks like it was delivered:

After: 6 trips – 8 flights, car-rides & bus-ride

On my way to Dortmund, Germany

After several more flights with different airlines, I remain very satisfied with the Xiaomi aluminum luggage. It continues to pass through security without any issues and always finds a spot in the overhead compartments. Despite a few hits from careless passengers trying to stuff their belongings into the bins, the suitcase still looks great and has no scratches.

The wheels are impressively smooth and silent, making it easy to maneuver through various terrains, including longer walks on cobblestone streets. The carry-on’s durability and sleek design have consistently impressed me.

The only minor inconvenience is the Y-shaped strap, which can be tricky to close when the suitcase is overpacked. You need to thread the strap through a metal opening, which can be a bit cumbersome if the suitcase is too full. However, this is a small drawback compared to the overall quality of the suitcase.

In summary, the Xiaomi aluminum suitcase offers excellent value for its price, combining style, durability, and functionality. It’s a fantastic alternative to more expensive brands like Rimowa, and I highly recommend it for anyone in need of a reliable carry-on.

If you don’t need the fancy aluminum suitcase, here’s a cheaper alternative. I mentioned this suitcase earlier when writing about the inner compartment. I think having a strap on one side and a zipper compartment on the other side (for small stuff) is great. Further the “Xiaomi Business Suitcase” offers another great feature: there’s a separated compartment at the front which holds your electronics such as laptop, tablet or phone – very convenient! No need to open the whole case to remove those items, just get them out of the front compartment. That comes in handy if you want to get out your laptop at airport security or if you try to get some work done while waiting at the gate.
I’ll stick with my metal suitcase as I think it’s more durable and a bit more stylish – but I’m very tempted to test it.

The Xiaomi Business Suitcase is available for 87.99 USD at Banggood.

ARZOPA A1 Max 17″ – Portable Monitor Review – a perfect workation tool

When it comes to working efficiently while traveling, having a second monitor alongside your laptop can be a game-changer. For business trips and workation, a portable monitor is the perfect tool to boost productivity. It needs to be lightweight and easy to use, with minimal connectors for convenience. After extensive research, I found the ARZOPA 17.3″ Portable Monitor to be the most suitable and convenient option for my needs. Here, I’ll share my thoughts on some available models and provide a detailed review of my final selection.

ARZOPA 17" Portable Monitor
ARZOPA 17″ Portable Monitor

What I was looking for

With numerous portable monitors on the market, it’s essential to identify your personal “must-haves.” For me, these were:

  • > 15″ Screen – I wanted a screen slightly larger than my laptop’s for better visibility and comfort.
  • USB-C and HDMI port – While many monitors offer only a USB-C connection, which handles both power and image transmission, I wanted the added flexibility of an HDMI port. This allows me to connect the monitor to various devices, such as a smartphone or a video console for my kids.

Not Deciding Factors for Me

While there are features that might be essential for you, I didn’t consider these factors critical for my needs. However, I will list them for comparable models in case they are important to you:

  • Touchscreen -I don’t use this feature on my laptop, so it wasn’t a priority for me.
  • Built-in Battery: I’m fine with the monitor being powered via my laptop.
  • >4K Resolution & >80Hz Refresh Rate: For regular work, HD resolution and a 60Hz refresh rate are sufficient for me. If you’re considering a monitor for gaming, you might want something with better specs.

Ports & Connection

ARZOPA 17″ Portable Monitor – HMDI & 2x USB-C ports

Why did I want to have USB-C in the first place? The great thing about portable monitors with a USB-C connection is that you only need to connect one cable, and your setup is done. Simply connect your laptop to the Arzopa portable monitor using the included USB-C cable, and the monitor is powered while data is transferred seamlessly.
I once went on vacation by car, carrying a standard 24″ monitor. It was not only bulky (the screen is larger, but the attached stand is the real issue), but I also had to carry a connection cable and a power cable. In contrast, I use my Arzopa monitor not only for traveling but also for quick work sessions at home, like at the kitchen table (since my office space has now become a kids’ space). The setup is done in seconds compared to setting up a standard screen.

So why did I also want HDMI? For my work setup, the USB-C connection is perfectly fine for both Windows laptops and Apple Macs. It is the preferred connection since HDMI only transfers data and does not power the monitor. If you connect your Arzopa portable monitor using an HDMI cable, you also need to connect it to a power source via USB-C.
I still have some devices that do not have USB-C and wanted to be flexible for other solutions. For example, you can use the Arzopa portable monitor as a video display on the go and play videos from your phone. All iPhones up to the iPhone 14 can only be used via a Lightning to HDMI adapter. Additionally, there are video consoles that only offer HDMI video output. So, I wanted to ensure I had the flexibility to connect various devices.

Screen

ARZOPA 17" Portable Monitor
ARZOPA 17″ Portable Monitor

One of my must haves was the larger size of the ARZOPA 17″ Portable Monitor compared to a standard 15″ laptop monitor. This extra and larger screen significant difference in productivity and comfort. As you can see in the picture, the portable monitor is not only larger but also noticeably brighter than the laptop screen, providing a more vivid and clear display.

Hands-on Experience – Review

Positive aspects

Size: I definitely made the right choice with the size. The portable monitor is large enough for working and small enough to travel. Without a sleeve, I was able to fit it in the same backpack compartment designed for a 15-16″ laptops. It is very thin and lightweight, making it easy to carry around without any hassle.

Display: The brightness is more than sufficient, even brighter than my Lenovo laptop that I use for work. I’m also happy with the resolution and refresh rate, which are the same as my Lenovo. While the MacBook Air screen looks better in contrast, the ARZOPA monitor still performs admirably.

Neutral Aspects

Stand: The stand is made of durable metal, small, and easy to store. It can also be used as a stand for your phone or tablet, which is great on a plane. However, I’m not sure if I would prefer a built-in stand within a cover. Since it is an extra part, you can easily forget to take it with you, which can be an issue when setting up your screen.

Arzopa 17" portable screen - Stand
Arzopa 17″ portable screen – Stand

Negative Aspects

Cover: What I’m missing is a “smart” cover. There is no protection for the screen, and a cover that is exactly the size of the screen would have been perfect to protect it and allow storage in the same backpack compartment as my laptop. Most laptop sleeves are not a good fit, as they are larger than needed and designed for laptops.

Comparison

In summary, I chose this model because I wanted a large screen with an HDMI connection. The other models were also in my shortlist and might be more interesting for you.
(If HDMI hadn’t been important to me, I would have chosen the LG model.)

How to unlock speed limit on Fiido D11

Fiido D11 - unlock speed limit

I currently ride 3 different e-bikes: HIMO Z20, HIMO C20 and Fiido D11. They are all limited to 25 km/h and I tried my best to unlock the speed. Fiido only stated the option to unlock Fiido D4s, but now there seems to be a solution for Fiido D11:

  3. Press power button until “P2” is displayed
  4. You will see 220 – which stands for the wheel size
  5. Press mode button, then 220 will blink
  6. Press power button and change to 130
  7. Press and hold power button
  8. Press power buttton to restart Fiido D11
  9. That’s it – ride faster

Attention: Although the speed on the speedometer of Fiido D11 is now showing a lower speed – the actual speed is higher (measured by GPS).

I will post a video soon so you can see the outcome.

Speed Limit on HIMO Z20

Stop wasting your time on YouTube videos!

There are many videos on Youtube showing how to unlock speed on HIMO Z20 – but they are wrong – I tested it!
They all follow a similar technique and change the wheel diameter. It seems that Fiido D11 can be unlocked, but HIMO Z20 behaves differently.
If you change the wheel diameter on HIMO Z20 the speedometer shows a higher speed as the computer is calculating speed based on the smaller wheel. However the actual speed meassured with GPS is still the same.

Up to now I haven’t found a solution to unlock speed of HIMO Z20.

After riding my Xiaomi Scooter Pro for a while I was up to getting something more secure and more comfortable. I do a 24 km commute from home to office and back everyday and for me my scooter replaced public transport. E-bikes and e-scooter are a great alternative to public transport, especially during these times. keeping social distance.

At first I took a look at the Fiido D2, which seems to be a very popular brand. But then Xiaomi Himo C20 e-bike caught my attention. It doesn’t fold as compact as Fiido, but Himo looks stylish and I don’t think I need to fold it that compact. (I almost never folded my e-scooter). Further I thought the 20″ wheels will give me more driving comfort.

The box is pretty large and I was happy it was delivered to my door. The bike itself comes fully assembled and is folded within the box. The brakes were set a bit weak, which I adjusted, and the fenders need to me mounted – if you like. So, some standard tools for the final adjust are needed, but basically you are set out of the box, which contains:

Frame

I was thrilled by the high built quality when I took my Xiaomi Himo C20 out of the box as I didn’t expect it to be such a great quality bike for the relatively small price. The frame is made of durable aluminum alloy and holds a max. load of 100 kg. Himo C20 is rated IPX5 waterproof (= can resist a sustained, low-pressure water jet spray) such as rain. The seat tube can be extended and fixed in different heights, the handle bar is not adjustable in height. I’m 1.83 cm in height and find the seating position very comfortable to ride – I didn’t extract the seat tube to the fullest. Also the saddle is comfortable for longer trips. A nice gimmick: within the seat tube there is an air pump integrated so you can fill your tires when on the road. I forgot to take photos as I was using my electric Xiaomi Air Pump with integrated battery.

Folding Mechanism

You can fold Xiaomi Himo C20, but it’s not a folding bike such as Fiido D2. As described I got it as I don’t need to fold my bike into a compact size for travelling or storage. Although the folding mechanism of Himo helps a bit to save space, especially when you store it in a hall way or small office corridor. Since the handle bar flips down and the pedals can be folded, the parts sticking out the most are secured. So you don’t accidentally get caught on them when passing by.

The back wheel holds the 250W brushless motor that accelerates you up to 24 km/h in full electric mode (moped mode) and should get you 80 km far in assisted mode / 50km in full electric mode (I haven’t tested that so far). The good thing compared to an e-scooter: the motor is not limiting the top speed. While an e-scooter is slowing you down before you exceed top speed, that is not the case on this bike. You can go faster when hitting the pedals or going downhill.
Integrated in the frame sits the 10 Ah battery (18650 lithium ion battery) with power port and LED indicator. Power usage is stated with 0.72 kw/h per 100km. With a key you can remove the battery to conveniently take it with you for charging. A full charge takes about 6 hours. It is stated that a battery management system offers protection against overcurrent, overcharge, short circuit, and temperature. Xiaomi Himo C20 is turned on with neither button on battery nor key, but via a button on the display.
Extra Batteries: finally extra batteries are available on Aliexpress!

Gear Shift

The e-bike features a 6-gear Shimano shifting system with 6 sprockets on the back and one gear on the front. The front sprocket is covered so your trousers don’t get ripped or dirty on your way to your office. The gear shift sits on the handle bar next to the bell, with a button to shift up and and a lever to shift down.

LEDs and Display

Xiaomi Himo C20 features a white front LED light that is connected to the battery of the bike. It is activated via the on/off button on the display (short press while turned on). The red rear light, including red reflector, is not connected to the main battery of the bike. The rear light uses two AA batteries and is turned on with a button on the bottom of the light. At first I thought it’s a disadvantage, but since I think it’s not that nice I’m happy that I can replace it with a more fancy one with extra features. It’s not connected as you can remove the seat tube with the integrated air pump and the wires would become unhandy.

The display is well readable during bright sunlight. It holds the on/off button for Himo C20 and a mode switch button. It reads current speed, mileage of the trip and battery status shown in four squares on the right. By short pressing the mode button you switch between Eco (pedal assisted), Mid and High – both full electric modes (moped mode). Long pressing the button activates Parking mode. You can ride fully manual, but this way the display (and optional light) are turned on. In this mode the trip mileage changes to total milage of the scooter.

Tires

The 20″ tires of Himo C20 are labelled “BMX Race – all season compound by CST). They are 20 x 2.125 air tube tires which require a pressure of 40 – 65 psi (thats 2.8 – 4.5 bar) as printed on them.

Brakes

Xiaomi Himco C20 features disk brakes on front and back wheel. A regenerative brake system (KERS) would have been nice to charge the battery from the generated braking energy. They were set very weak out of the box so it is recommended to adjust the steel cable before your first ride.

Xiaomi Himo C20 – Handling

Three operating modes are offered with Xiaomi Himo C20:

  • human power mode – using the pedals without electric assistance [powered off]
  • power assist mode – the motor supports you while pedalling [ECO]
  • full electric mode – you have two motor power settings: [MID] & [HIGH]

You can’t use the motor from start, you need to give the bike a little push and reach about 3 km/h.

I wouldn’t recommend Xiaomi Himo C20 if you want to go without electric assistance frequently. The bike is simply too heavy and a lot of effort is needed. (I do recommend if you want to exercise 😉 ).
In pedal assistant mode it is quite nice to ride. Although I always go in “high”, full speed electric mode and hit the pedals for faster acceleration, higher top speed and more fun.

My driving experience so far

I was riding my Xiaomi Scooter Pro all summer long, so how do they compare? Acceleration is of course faster with the e-scooter – in electric only mode! When the traffic lights turn green I’m the fastest one, overtaking all other cyclists and scooter riders. I fully push the throttle and hit the pedals. My ride from home to work is about 12km and I used my e-scooter for the full route and didn’t combine it with public transport. Having a seat on the Xiaomi Himo C20 is definitely a big plus. And I don’t even feel lazy, as I’m frequently hitting the pedals and do some exercise. Usually I got to the office without pedalling much, so I don’t arrive sweaty; on my way home I do more exercise.

Size

In terms of space I don’t realise a difference. I almost never folded my scooter, Xiaomi Himo C20 is a bit longer. I don’t see a problem taking the e-bike on the subway. The only reason I would take my Xiaomi Scooter Pro is when combining it with a train ride so I can store it as it is not that high and fits in the luggage compartment, and can be carried over stairs much easier. Since I got Himo I almost never used my scooter again. Only for very small hops to a store close by. Most of the time it’s e-bike time: more fun and more convenient.

When considering storage space: Fiido is when folded the shortest as it folds in half while the others don’t and C20 is clearly the longest and highest. But Himo C20 is actually the narrowest, when putting it against a wall, as the handle bar folds down.

Since I just got my Xiaomi Himo C20 and only drove it a few times, I’ll wait a bit for my final and detailed conclusion and thoughts. As of now I’m super satisfied and can recommend it. Xiaomi Himo C20 surpassed my expectations in terms of quality and driving comfort.

The only big issue I discovered so far is the following: For legal reasons e-bikes in China have to beep frequently, when when in electric mode C20 beeps every 5 seconds and that is super annoying when driving. Even worse, pedestrians and other bikers think you are honking and giving you bad looks constantly. Solved: You can disconnect the wires from the speaker in the black box. See infos below in the FAQs.
I don’t wanna seem picky, but I want to share all the discovered minor issues as well if they are interesting or important for you. The pedals seem a bit weak as they yield a bit, but that’s due to the folding mechanism. The brakes are a bit difficult to fine tune. You need to pull the brake lever all the way through and if set a bit too strong they are grinding. I also would have preferred a push throttle (as found on scooters) rather than a hand throttle similar to a motor bike. The fenders are a bit tricky to mount, see the videos below for instructions.

Do you have any further questions? You can ask me in the comments below.

Quick Review of the Xiaomi Air Pump

I got the Xiaomi Air Pump as it looks stylish and I wanted to try it. I got it from Aliexpress. What I like a lot:

  • it shows current tire pressure
  • you can preset desired pressure
  • built-in battery
  • built in LED light (in case you are looking for the valve at night)
  • no adapter needed to inflate Himo C20

Xiaomi Himo C20 – FAQ

Here’s some updated additional info on some items I got frequently asked.

Xiaomi Himo C20 – Where to get extra batteries?

Finally they are available on Aliexpress, currently available for around 200 USD. Be carefully to select the right one as this offer covers all Himo type batteries!

Xiaomi Himo C20 – How to stop the annoying beeping?

The black box behind the saddle pole holds the controller that is connected to the speaker. Simply disconnect the plug and strip the pins. Easily done under 5 min., only a screwdriver is needed to open the box.

24″ Xiaomi Suitcase Spinnerwheel (90 Minutes) – Review

Xiaomi 24" spinner wheel suitcase luggage check-in

I was on the hunt for a new large check-in suitcase for my travels. Having had an excellent experience with my 20″ aluminum Xiaomi suitcase as carry-on luggage (you can find my review here), I decided to stay with the brand and explore their polycarbonate Xiaomi suitcase. Both pieces of luggage are designed and manufactured by 90 minutes. In this article, I want to share my experience after using this Xiaomi suitcase for a while:

24" Xiaomi Suitcase - Spinner wheel made of PC (polycarbonate)
24″ Xiaomi Suitcase – Spinner wheel made of PC (polycarbonate)

Xiaomi 24″ Suitcase – PC (polycarbonate, spinner wheel)

Xiaomi suitcase models

The Xiaomi 90 Minutes Spinner Wheel suitcase is available in two sizes: 24″ (65L) and 20″ (36L), and comes in four colors: black, grey, white, and blue. The 20″ Xiaomi suitcase measures 55 x 37.5 x 22.3 cm and qualifies as carry-on luggage for aircraft. In my opinion, there are better options in this category. Either the Xiaomi 20″ Aluminum suitcase, which I tested and found to be more durable and aesthetically pleasing, or the 20″ Xiaomi Business suitcase, which features an extra front compartment for storing a laptop or tablet. This feature is particularly handy during security checks, as it allows you to remove these items without opening the entire suitcase. Since I was looking for larger check-in luggage, I opted for the 24″ polycarbonate Xiaomi suitcase.

Xiaomi 24″ polycarbonate suitcase – Specs

The Xiaomi 24″ suitcase measures 67 x 44 x 25 cm (26.4 x 17.3 x 9.8 in) and weighs about 4.1 kg (9.1 lbs). It is very light, which is important for air travel as airlines are becoming stricter with weight limits. The body is made of polycarbonate (PC) material, featuring a “3-layer composite compressive structure that offers higher strength.” The outer shell has a beautiful honeycomb pattern that is also scratch-resistant. As mentioned, the capacity is about 65L.

The Xiaomi 24″ suitcase features a TSA approved lock where you can set an individual 3-number code. The pull rod is made of thickened aluminum alloy with anodized processing and has four adjustable positions. When fully extended, it is about 1.05m high, which I find to be a convenient height. The shaking of the rod is within an acceptable range. The wheels are made of TPE material, making them shockproof, durable, and noiseless. More on that in my conclusion.

24" Xiaomi Suitcase (90 minutes) - TSA lock
24″ Xiaomi Suitcase – TSA lock

Even though the spinner wheel suitcase is sold under the Xiaomi brand, it is manufactured by 90 minutes. The inside compartments on each side are designed differently. On the left, you can close the entire compartment with a zipper, and there are two pockets for small items like chargers and keys. The right compartment is secured with an x-shaped strap with a clasp.

Conclusion

After: 5 trips – 7 flights & 3.000 km on a pickup truck

I checked in my Xiaomi 24″ suitcase on seven flights; it literally traveled once around the globe and was even lost by an airline at one point (luckily, I got it back). In addition to that, it traveled more than 3,000 km on the truck bed of a pickup truck. Upfront overall, I’m very satisfied!

24" Xiaomi Suitcase - Testing & Review
Testing & Review on several flights and a truck bed (comparing it to my Rimowa)

These are my findings in detail: The wheels of the Xiaomi suitcase are silent and very smooth. You can comfortably pull the luggage on any terrain, whether running on two wheels or using it as a spinner wheel on all four wheels. The shaking of the pulling rod is quite acceptable and comparable to other suitcases I have used.

I find the design of the compartments very convenient. You can place smaller items and clothes (socks, underwear, etc.) in the left compartment with a zipper to prevent them from falling out when opening the suitcase. Small items such as cables, chargers, keys, and medicine can be stored in the pockets, where they are securely stored and easily accessible. Larger clothes can be placed on the right side. The X-shaped strap allows you to overpack your luggage a bit, where a zipper compartment would not stretch that wide.

I believe I quite stressed the Xiaomi suitcase, and I’m very satisfied with the result. It got scratches here and there; on- and offloading it from several planes multiple times and bouncing on the truck bed definitely took its toll. However, the suitcase did a great job protecting the items inside. My Xiaomi suitcase is not deformed, with no deep scratches, cracks, or other damage. The zippers, wheels, and pulling rod work as if I had never used it before.

 Price / Retailer Comparison

The first series of Xiaomi suitcases I tested seems to be no longer available, but there is a new series that looks equally interesting. Perhaps I will soon replace my Rimowa (the red one seen on the pickup) with this new Xiaomi model and test it here. You can check out the latest Xiaomi luggage series here:

Ninebot ES2 (by Segway) Scooter – Review

Ninebot by Segway e-Scooter ES2

Ninebot ES2 (by Segway)

With 12.5 kg Ninebot ES2 is about the same weight as its competitor  Xiaomi Scooter M365. With a stated max. speed of 25 km/h ES2 should travel 25 km wide. Since the Chinese company Ninebot bought Segway the scooter is sold as “Ninebot by Segway KickScooter ES2”. Here’s my review:

Ninebot by Segway KickScooter ES2 Review
Ninebot by Segway KickScooter ES2

Ninebot ES2 comes almost fully assembled out of the box. You only need to attach the handlebar with 4 screws (tools are included as well). Further you get a charger and cable to load the built-in battery.

Frame

The sturdy frame of Ninebot ES2 scooter is made of metal and the scooter weights 12.7 kg. You have a good stand on the footstep which is 55cm long and 15 cm wide. With a rubberised finish you keep a strong and non-slippy position while standing. The max weight of the driver should exceed 100 kg. Below the footstep there’s a foldout stand to sturdy park your scooter. Ninebot ES2 folds within seconds, the mechanism sits between steering bar and footstep. The crossbar then connects to the cover of the back wheel to easily carry your scooter which feels well balanced. Ninebot ES2 is IP54 certified, which means it is splashproof.

Segway Ninebot ES2 folded to carry

Motor

The 300W motor sits within the front wheel and accelerates the scooter up to a speed of a little over 25km/h.

Battery

A built-in 187 Wh battery sits in the steering rod. According to company info it get’s you 25km far, but this value seems a bit exaggerated. The stated charging time of 3,5h is also a bit optimistic, it’s rather 4h. But you can upgrade! You can hook up an additional battery to the rod to extend range to 45km and increase top speed to 35 km/h.

Display & LEDs

Segway Ninebot ES2 features a small display on the handle bar that indicates your driving speed, battery level, Bluetooth connection & power mode. A white front LED is integrated in the bar and a red tail light is mounted on the back. They can be activated by short pressing the power button when ES2 is powered on. A bell is missing which is legally required in some countries.

Further Ninebot ES2 offers an underbody light. The 16 LEDs can be controlled via app and offer several effects and colors.

Tires & Suspension

Segway Ninebot ES2 uses solid rubber tires, so no worries about punctures. They are not shock absorbing, but therefor ES2 offers suspension. Attention: While ES2 offers suspension on front and back, ES1 only offers suspension on the front. The suspension is essential for a smooth ride so I recommend going for ES2 model!

Brakes

Integrated in the front wheel there is an eABS, anti-lock braking system and is operated with a handle on the steering bar. It is a regenerative system, which means the power produced during deceleration flows back into your battery. The auxilliary back wheel break is mechanical, you have to step on the wheel cover.

Segway Ninebot ES2 - two separated breaks

Ninebot by Segway ES2 - Handlebar
Ninebot ES2 – Handlebar

The handling bar holds the break lever (grey) on the left and the accelerator (blue) on the right. In the middle there’s the display and the power button. If you short press the power button twice when turned on, you can switch between Eco (5 km/h), Normal (15 km/h) and Sport mode (26 km/h). The current mode is indicated with the (S) icon on the display. No icon means Eco mode, a blue S stands for normal mode and a Red S indicates sport mode.

Ninebot ES2 is a pedal assisted e-scooter. That means you need to give it an initial push and then accelerate after reaching a basic speed. Afterwards you can cruise fully on electric power. Segway ES2 features a cruise control which has to be activated via smartphone app upfront. If you keep pushing the accelerator for longer than 5 sec, a waring tone sounds and the speed is constantly hold. Tap either break or accelerator lever to deactivate cruise control.

App
As already mentioned a few features like cruise control have to be activated via app. Segway Ninebot ES2 also offers anti theft protection. When activated the tires are blocked as soon as someone tries to move your scooter and it starts beeping. Additionally the app reads out live data such as current speed, average speed, milage, battery info,… Firmware updates are also accomplished via app.

Segway-Ninebot App for KickScooter ES2

Conclusion

Ninebot ES2 is an ideal companion for short and longer distances. It conveniently folds to fit into your truck or to be carried on public transport. After a short manual push you can cruise with even a bit more than 25km/h. The stated 25km range are a bit exaggerated but you can reach about 20km. When the battery status falls below 10% the power of the motors goes down. Steep hill upwards up to 10% are no problem for ES2, if it is steeper you have to support manually.

As the battery sits in the steering rod you get a pretty good feeling while steering. It’s also easy to quickly move within public transport as the footstep is light to be turned fast. The suspension does a good job smoothening uneven pavement although it is not as smooth as the air tyres used in Xiaomi M365. If you are interested in both of them, also take a look at my comparison review. Another negative side effect of the suspension is the feeling while accelerating or breaking. As it yields it doens’t give a sturdy feedback. I really like the break system: the main break is the electronically break that regenerates battery. But you also got a mechanical auxiliary system. The display on the steering bar shows you all the info you need and the underbody light gives your scooter an individual sweet touch. I really enjoy cursing around with it.

Price / Retailer Comparison

I think by now the best source is Amazon, where you can buy your local version.
In Germany you need a special version due to regulations.

Xiaomi M365 e-Scooter – Review

Xiaomi Mijia scooter M365

Xiaomi M365 weights 12,5kg which is about the same as its competitor Ninebot ES2. With a max. speed of 25 km/h it should travel a distance of 30km. Here’s my review:

Xiaomi Mi Scooter M365
Xiaomi Scooter M365

Xiaomi M365 Scooter comes almost fully assembled. Similar to Segway Ninebot Segway ES2 you only need to attach the handlebar with 4 screws (tools are included as well). Further you get the charger and cable to load the built-in battery. LED lights & bell are already mounted. Additionally there are 2 replacement tubes for the air tyres.

Xiaomi M365 Scooter Versions:
There are multiple versions available (EU version, international). When ordering with Gearbest or Banggood first pay attention where it is shipped from and what is included. The EU version comes with extra wheels and tubes. Regarding the plug & charger it doesn’t really matter. You can change the power cord, so go for the cheapest price. The charger is made for 100-240V that’s not an issue:

Xiaomi M365 Charger & Plug
Xiaomi M365 Charger & Plug

Frame

The sturdy frame of Xiaomi M365 scooter is made of aerospace-grade aluminum and weights 12.7 kg. The e-scooter was awarded with the Red Dot Design award in 2017. Overall the Xiaomi scooter appears to be robust, although the weldseam is not appealing. The footstep is 55cm long and 15 cm wide with a rubberised finish to keep a strong and non-slippy position while standing. The max weight of the driver should exceed 100 kg. Below the footstep there’s a foldout stand to sturdy park your scooter. Xiaomi M365 folds within seconds, the mechanism sits between steering bar and footstep. The crossbar connects to the cover of the back wheel to easily carry your scooter which feels well balanced.

Xiaomi M365 folded to carry – 12,5 kg weight

Motor

The front wheel holds the 250 W motor which accelerates your and your Xiaomi scooter to a max. speed of 25 km/h, actually 26km/h as I discovered during testing.

Battery

A built-in 280 Wh battery sits below the footstep and gives Xiaomi a good center of gravity while riding and carrying. According to company info it get’s you 30km far, but this value seems a bit exaggerated. The stated charging time of 5,5h was proven in my test.

LEDs & Display

Xiaomi M365 scooter doesn’t hold a display. Data such as speed and range have to be monitored on a smartphone via the app. The handlebar holds 4 LEDs to indicate battery status and mode. The lowest green LED as seen in the picture below, indicates Eco mode. Further on the handle bar are a bell and a strong, white LED headlight. The back wheel cover holds a red taillight which is flashing while braking.

Xiaomi E-Scooter - Front & Back LED, Display
Xiaomi M365 Scooter – Front & Back LED, Display

Tyres & Suspension

Compared to other Scooters like Segway Ninebot ES2, Xiaomi M365 scooter is fitted with tube air tyres instead of solid rubber tyres. Unfortunately the access of the valves to inflate them is inconvenient. Xiaomi includes a valve-extension for easier access. Without this piece pumping up the tyres is very tricky. M365 doesn’t have additional suspension, but the air tyres do a really good good smoothing your ride on uneven terrain.

Brakes

Xiaomi M365 Scooter has two separated break systems: Integrated in the front wheel there is an eABS, regenerative anti-lock braking system. When you release the accelerator lever, the front wheel slowly breaks and the generated energy flows back into battery. You can set the strength within the app. The back wheel holds a disk break which is activated with the break handle on the steering bar. So this break is the primary break as you can only set the strength of the front break within the app and you can influence it during the ride. In comparison Ninebot ES2 uses a completely different system that benefits better from the regenerated power. Ex factory the break at the back is adjusted a bit weak but you can set it stronger by tightening the conducting wire.

Xiaomi M365 Scooter - Front & Rear Break

Xiaomi E-Scooter M365 - Steering Bar
Xiaomi E-Scooter M365 – Steering Bar

Simply single press the button on the steering bar to power on. Long press to shut it down again. When Xiaomi e-scooter is on, a short single press will turn the lights  on or off. Double press the button to switch between normal and Eco Mode, which limits Xiaomi M365 to 18 km/h. If Eco Mode is activated, the lowest LED light turns green. On the left side of the steering bar theres the break brake handle and bell. On the right side is the accelerator lever. Gently push downwards and adjust the amount of pressure to reach your comfortable speed.

Xiaomi M365 is a pedal assisted e-scooter. That means you need to give it an initial push and then accelerate after reaching a basic speed. Afterwards you can cruise fully on electric power. Mi Scooter holds a cruise control which has to be activated via smartphone app. If you keep pushing the accelerator for longer than 5 sec, a waring tone sounds and the speed is constantly hold. Short pull on the brake or push the accelerator lever to cancel cruise control.

App

As already mentioned a few features like cruise control have to be activated via app. Xiaomi M365 also offers anti theft protection. When activated the tires are blocked as soon as someone tries to move your scooter and it starts beeping. You can mount your phone on the steering handle, this way you can get a speedometer. Additionally the app reads out data such as average speed, milage, battery info,… Firmware updates are also accomplished via app. Xiaomi M365 EU version works with Mi Home App, the international version with Segway Ninebot App as well. The apps are available for iOS and Android, although I had problems to use it on iOS.

Conclusion

Xiaomi M365 electric scooter is an ideal companion for short and longer distances. It conveniently folds to fit into your truck or to be carried on public transport. After a short manual push you can cruise with even a bit more than 25km/h. The stated 30km range are a bit exaggerated but you can reach about 20km. When the battery status falls below 25% the power of the motors goes down noticeably. The air tyres absorb uneven grounds pretty well and you can experience a smooth ride on different pavement. The center of gravity is low and gives you a secure feeling with high and low speeds. The front LED is very bright so you can use your scooter at night as well.
The Mi home app on iOS is pretty bothersome and I had quite some issues. Good thing is you don’t need the app very often unless you want to change settings. At first I thought a display is really missing, but I am not looking that much on it on Ninebot ES2 scooter. The battery status is the most important information. Overall I’m pretty impressed with my Xiaomi M365 scooter and would definately buy it again. If you can’t decide compared to Segway Ninebot ES2, check out my comparison review.

Price / Retailer Comparison

I think by now the best source is Amazon, where you can buy your local version.
In Germany you need a special version due to regulations.
If you don’t like the scooter, return it easily
