ADO Air 20 vs Fiido D11 – Comparison

ADO Air 20 vs Fiido D11

Choosing the perfect e-bike for my daily commute is a daunting task. Having tested the ADO A20, I was thoroughly impressed by its performance, making the decision even tougher. The Fiido D11, on the other hand, is smaller and lighter, which adds to its appeal. With ADO’s release of the Air 20, which shares many similarities with the Fiido D11, it’s time to dive into a detailed comparison of these two 20″ folding e-bikes.

Both ADO and Fiido offer enhanced versions of their e-bikes: the ADO Air 20 Pro and the Fiido D21, along with the Fiido X. While this comparison will focus on the entry-level models, I’ll also touch upon the specs and features of these upgraded versions to give you a comprehensive overview.

In this post we explore the key differences, performance metrics, and overall value of the ADO Air 20 and Fiido D11, helping you make an informed decision for your daily commute.

Why 20″ Folding E-Bikes?

For my daily commute, I needed a compact e-bike that was easy to store. A key feature for me was the removable battery, allowing for convenient charging. I believe 20″ wheels strike the ideal balance: they keep the bike small enough for easy storage while providing a smooth and comfortable ride, especially over longer distances. Compared to the smaller 16″ models, 20″ wheels offer a more stable and enjoyable experience.

Fiido D11 vs Himo Z20 – 20″ folding e-bike

My Fiido D11 is excellent for city rides on paved streets, but it struggles on gravel roads. The ADO A20 and the similar HIMO Z20 are better all-rounders. You can read my review of the Fiido D11 vs. HIMO Z20 or watch my video comparison of the HIMO Z20 vs. ADO A20 for more insights.
I hope I can do a video review of ADO Air 20 and Fiido D11 soon.

What’s different – Versions

ADO Air 20 / Pro & Regional versions

CE Version (European Version) vs International Version
Due to legal restrictions the European features a 250W motor, offers a max. speed of 25 km/h and doesn’t feature a throttle. The bike only operates in pedal assist mode!
The international version can be ordered within the EU, however operations on street is not legal.
ADO Air 20 vs ADO Air 20 Pro
The Pro version of ADO Air 20 is equipped with a larger battery (10.4 Ah vs 9.6 Ah), features a Bafang brand motor and offers dual speed automatic transmission. The ride comfort is also improved with an adjustable front fork suspension.

Fiido D11 / D21 / Fiido X

Fiido D11 vs Fiido D21
Fiido D21 was an improved version of Fiido D11, offering a torque sensor, instead of a speed sensor and a different color option. Fiido D21 is discontinued in favor of Fiido X

Fiido D11 vs Fiido X
Fiido X is also available as 250W and 350W version to comply with European regulations. Compared to Fiido D11 a torque sensor is used and allows 32 km/h top speed (350W version). Same as ADO Air it offers hydraulic disc brakes. The frame is made of magnesium alloy.

What’s different?
ADO Air 20 (CE) & Fiido D11

Similarities and minor differences

ADO Air 20 vs Fiido D11 – folded

The Fiido D11 and ADO Air 20 share several key similarities. Both e-bikes are equipped with a 250W motor, providing a top speed of 25 km/h, which is ideal for urban environments and meet the legal EU requirements. They also offer a similar range in pedal assist mode, roughly between 80 to 100 km, ensuring you a substantial distance on a single charge. Additionally, both models feature an adjustable seat pole, allowing riders of different heights to find a comfortable riding position. However, there are some minor differences to note. While neither bike includes suspension, which might affect comfort on rougher terrains, the adjustable steering rod of Ado Air allows for a more comfortable seating position.
When folded, they are roughly the same size, with the Fiido D11 being a bit smaller in width (2 cm) but 6 cm higher.

Motor & Transmission

ADO Air 20 vs Fiido D11 – Carbon drive belt vs 7-speed transmission

In the European version, both folding e-bikes offer a 250W motor and allow a top speed of 25 km/h. The ADO Air 20 features a torque sensor, providing a more responsive and smoother pedal assist experience by adjusting the motor power based on the rider’s pedaling force. In contrast, the Fiido D11 only offers a speed sensor, which can result in a more abrupt push when the motor kicks in. For a torque sensor within a Fiido bike, you would need to look at the D21 or Fiido X models.

While all Fiido bikes come with a 7-speed Shimano gear shift, the ADO Air 20 is equipped with a single-speed carbon belt drive. The Pro version of the ADO Air 20 offers a dual-speed automatic transmission.

Tires & Brakes

The ADO Air 20 features 20″ tires that are 1.95″ wide, while the Fiido D11 has 20″ tires that are only 1.75″ wide. The thinner tires on the D11 can feel less stable on bumpy roads, whereas the wider tires on the Air 20 provide better traction and a smoother ride. In terms of brakes, the Air 20 is equipped with hydraulic disc brakes, which offer superior stopping power and better modulation, especially in wet conditions. The Fiido D11, on the other hand, comes with mechanical disc brakes. If you prefer hydraulic brakes on a Fiido bike, you would need to either upgrade them yourself or opt for the top model, the Fiido X.

Xiaomi Stroller – Best affordable Travel Buggy ?

Travelling with kids require a light, foldable and compact buggy. Since I had fine experience with Xiaomi products, I tested the e-Scooter, Aluminum Suitcase and Cameras, I decided to take a closer look at the Xiaomi Stroller.

I was looking for a light and compact folding travel buggy, that also qualifies as carry on luggage (after I had to wait for quite some time to receive the checked-in buggy on my recent air travels)
This is an overview, after I did extensive research on strollers, which I’ll update with my review once it arrives.

Xiaomi Folding Travel Buggy – Features

Design, Frame & Seat

Xiaomi buggy offers a very stylish and slick design with nice, decent color options. The high-strength aluminum alloy frame is both light & sturdy, the load-bearing parts are made of high quality carbon structural steel. It is stated that the key structural parts are imported from Belgium and Switzerland.

The 3-segment adjustable canopy is made of a four-sided elastic fabric and as stated available in 3 different color options. This color also reflects on the inside rim of the wheel. The canopy is sun protective (UPF50+) and isolates 95% of ultraviolet rays.

The seat cushion is made of a skin-friendly, antistatic & antibacterial “class A standard” fabric. The cloth is removable to wash it easily. Your baby is secured with a five-point seat belt with one button release.

Even tough it is stated that Xiaomi Stroller is suited for babies aged 0-36 month, because the seat can recline to an almost flat surface, I use a bassinet for newborns. I’ll switch to Xiaomi buggy when my kid is aged 6 month and can sit upright on his own. Hence it’s a nice feature to recline the seat if your child falls asleep. The seat reclines stepless to an almost flat surface.

Folding Mechanism

You can conveniently fold and unfold Xiaomi stroller within seconds using only one hand:

Xiaomi stroller folds to a compact size of 47.8 x 25.8 x 40.8 cm and weights 6.8 kg. Folded the buggy qualifies as carry-on luggage on an aircraft. You don’t need to check it in which will save you time and the stroller is not exposed to the dirty cargo bay of an aircraft and possible rough handling crew. The box also contains a shoulder strap to conveniently carry the stroller.

Xiaomi Stroller features four 6-inch wheels, filled with PU foam and independent suspension. Therefore it is suitable on any terrain and runs smoothly using double-bearing. The front wheels rotate 360°, the rear wheels offer a one-button brake system.

Details & Highlights

Some other details and highlights of Xiaomi Stroller:

  • Canopy skylight, a peekaboo window to watch your child
  • Non-slip push handle, which is comfortable in winter and cool in summer
  • Seamless waterproof zippers avoid leaking water into the stroller and protect the inside from wind
  • Large storage basket holding up to 5kg

Review

As mentioned, I haven’t received Xiaomi Travel Stroller for testing, but my friend Sami did and he made an unboxing and review video. The video is in Chinese, but you get to see the Stroller in action. Since we are both fathers of two, I had a long conversation with him and want to share insights. If you have additional questions, let me know in the comments and I’ll forward them to Sami.

Xiaomi Buggy Review – by my friend Sami Luo

First feature Sami mention is shock absorption of the wheels and Sami is thrilled how good it works. According to him Xiaomi Buggy is very lightweight, easy to fold and compact – ideal for travel. Even tough he thinks the stroller looks terrific it doesn’t feel super high quality, especially the canopy. Sami would prefer a bar to secure the baby additionally to the 5-point seat belt. Overall Xiaomi Stroller is not his main stroller choice, but great for air travel.

Retailer / Price

The Xiaomi Buggy is available on Aliexpress for a little over 100 EUR.

There are also plenty of spare party available, which is an additional plus for a travel buggy.

Update

In the end I decided to buy a Bugaboo Butterfly, which is more expensive, but also keeps a decent re-sell value. Reason is that I not only use it for travel but also as main stroller in the meantime. As affordable travel buggy, I would have picked the Xiaomi Buggy.
If you want me to share my experience on this folding travel buggy, let me know in the comments.

“We are extremely excited to bring the Mercedes F1 experience closer to our fans. Like us, Xiaomi is committed to continuous innovation and we are delighted to work alongside them to bring to the market this new edition of their flagship Mi Electric Scooter Pro 2.”

Mi Electric Scooter Pro 2 – Mercedes-AMG F1 Team Edition – Teaser image (@MercedesAMGF1)

I don’t know yet if it is just a design edition or if there will be any changes with the specs for the Mercedes-AMG edition. Xiaomi’s new e-scooter model Pro 2 just saw minor updates compared to predecessor Pro 1. The display is a bit different with an adaption of driving modes, the scooter will receive stronger LED lights and reflectors to comply with international markets as well as new fenders. But there are no major changes with the technical specs. Here you can read my detailed comparison: Xiaomi Scooter Pro 2 vs Xiaomi Scooter Pro.
I still do hope they have something in place to make the F1 edition stand out a bit. The new tires used on Ninebot ES models, 9″ tubeless filled with PV foam, would be the top one item on my wishlist.

Xiaomi Scooter Lite (Essential) – low price, entry level scooter

Xiaomi Scooter Lite (Mi Electric Scooter Essential) - new 2020 model

Xiaomi offers a scooter lineup with 3 models:

  • Xiaomi Scooter Lite (Essential) – entry level model
  • Xiaomi Scooter 1S – base model
  • Xiaomi Scooter Pro 2 – upgraded model with more power

Xiaomi Scooter 1S is the direct Xiaomi M365 successor with a few new features like display and better brakes. Here you can find my Xiaomi Scooter 1S vs Xiaomi Scooter M365 comparison. (including video)

Xiaomi Scooter Pro 2 is a facelift of the Pro model with some adoptions to meet requirements for the German market and to share components. Here you can find my Xiaomi Scooter Pro 2 vs Xiaomi Scooter Pro comparison.

Xiaomi Scooter Lite, also labelled Mi Electric Scooter Essential, is the successor of the less known Xiaomi Scooter M187 (Youth Edition).

Xiaomi Scooter Lite – Specs

Battery, Range, Size and Display

Basically the Lite edition is a version of Xiaomi Scooter 1S / M365 with a lower capacity battery. Instead of the 280 Wh battery used in 1S and M365 it is using a 183 Wh battery. The Xiaomi Youth Edition M187 also offered a lower capacity battery with 187 Wh. On the one side Xiaomi Lite is also the lightest scooter in the Xiaomi lineup with 12kg. On the other side the range is limited and a max. of 20km is stated. Besides that the frame size of Xiaomi Scooter Lite is the same as Xiaomi 1S, M365 and M187. Only Pro and Pro 2 are a bit larger. Great news is that the new Lite edition will also feature the display known from the Pro version, showing speed, battery status and driving mode. As all Xiaomi Scooters it will offer Bluetooth to connect with Mi Home App (available for iOS and Android).

Xiaomi Scooter Pro vs Xiaomi M365 - Handlebar
Xiaomi Scooter Pro vs Xiaomi M365 – Handlebar

Motor, Speed, Brakes and Tires

The brushless motor is the same, compared to 1S and M365, offering 250W constant power and 500W peak. While having the same motor Xiaomi Scooter Lite will only offer a max. speed of 20 km/h while all other models offer a max. speed of 25 km/h. Also the climbing angle will be lower, stated to be 10%. The same KERS (kinetic energy recovery system) is used like on the other scooters, being the electric brake on the front wheel. A mechanic disk brake is used on the back wheel. Xiaomi Scooter 1S was upgraded compared to M365 using the same disk brake as the Pro version which is a bit larger and thicker, since the M365 version tended to bend. I guess the “Pro brake” will be used as well so Xiaomi is using the same component on all new 2020 scooter models. Tires are also the same on all Xiaomi 2020 models: 8,5″ air tube tires. I was hoping the new 2020 lineup will get tubeless air tires.

Unagi E500 dual motor e-scooter – Preview

Unagi E450 dual motor scooter review

I really like the design of Xiaomi M365 scooter – no wonder they were awarded with a “Red Dot Design Award”. But when I first saw the Unagi I was blown away by the slick design, to me the best looking e-scooter so far! Well, the design is nice to look at, but how does it perform? There are two versions available Unagi E250 single motor and Unagi E500 dual motor. (Note: Unagi E500 was known as E450 before but it got a motor upgrade). Similar to Boosted Rev the Unagi E500 is powered on each front and back-wheel, but Unagi is a lot cheaper. So lets take a closer look at the specs:

Frame

As already mentioned, the design of Unagi Scooters is stunning and the materials used are superb. The tube is made of carbon fibre to strike an unprecedented balance of lightweight and heavy-duty strength. No wonder that Unagi E500 is more than 3kg lighter than Xiaomi Scooter Pro. The deck is a single piece of machined aluminum with embedded silicon on the top surface for traction. Similar to Xiaomi Pro and Ninebot MAX the footstep holds the battery. I prefer this construction over the battery placement within the tube (e.g. Ninebot ES2) as a lower center of gravity can be achieved which benefits driving experience. All of them are designed to carry a rider with a max. of 100kg. Likewise they all have a foldout stand integrated to conveniently park the scooter. But again with Unagi you can experience the extra effort they put in designing the scooter – their “ruthless obsession with detail” as they call it. Unagi seamlessly integrated the stand and as a result the stand is sturdy and simple; practically invisible when riding. What’s more Unagi is the only e-scooter among them with color options: both Unagi models are available in Cosmic Blue, Gotham Grey, Sea Salt White and Matte Black. Three separate coats are applied, including a laminate and a high-abrasion resistant paint to handle the wear and tear of the road. As the scooter is made of aluminum and carbon fibre it also never rusts.

Unagi Scooter (E500 Dual Motor) Review - Frame Design (former Unagi E450)
Unagi Scooter (E500 Dual Motor) – Frame Design

Motor, Motors actually

When ordering Unagi Model One you have two options: Unagi E250 contains a 250 watt motor, embedded in the front wheel. Unagi E500 has 250 watt motor in each wheel, supplying 500 watts in total and over 32 newton meters of torque. Max. speed is 25 km/h and it easily tackles hills with 15-degree inclines. That’s about the same as you can get on a Ninebot MAX or Xiaomi Pro. Xiaomi Pro even states 20% gradient, but according to my tests that’s overstated.

Battery & Range

The announced range for Unagi E500 is 25km. That’s not much compared to Ninebot MAX or Xiaomi Pro (45km). But they stated that this range can be achieved with a 75kg rider, driving 15 km/h on a flat road. So when I go with my Xiaomi Pro with full speed I achieve about 30km. Currently I don’t know how Unagi is calculating range (hopefully with full speed) but I will test that soon. There’s another item that has to be considered in relation to range – the battery and weight. Unagi is by far the lightest scooter among them (2kg lighter than Xiaomi Pro; almost 7kg lighter than Ninebot MAX). Consider that if you use your scooter in combination with public transport!
Unagi is relying on high quality batteries from Sony and Unagi promises “they will last for many years with continuous daily use”. The battery can be easily replaced.

LEDs & Display

The Display of Unagi E500 Scooter shows current mode, actual speed and battery status, same as all the other scooters. But it also shows mileage, I was missing that on Xiaomi and Ninebot. Unagi Scooters feature a 47 lumen LED front light and a rear blinking red LED.

Tires

E-Scooters rely on different solutions when it comes to tires and suspension. Ninebot ES series features solid rubber tires with suspension (ES1 just on front, ES2 on both wheels). I thought that gives good shock absorption but after testing I prefer the 8,5″ tube air tires of my Xiaomi Pro. Even considering the fact that Xiaomi doesn’t offer any other form of suspension. For their latest model MAX, Ninebot switched to 10″ tubeless air tires. While air tires offer great shock absorption they of course have a huge disadvantage: they can puncture or deflate, leaving you with a flat tire. (That happened on my Xiaomi as well). Unagi tackles both issues with 7.5″ honey-comb tires. On one hand they are solid rubber and puncture proof, on the other hand the air pockets of the honeycomb design provide shock absorption on front and rear wheel. I’m very much looking forward to test the result.

Brakes

Unagi E500 uses an electronic brake that is controlled via a lever on the handle. I prefer this method since the main brake is a regenerative braking system as the generated energy during braking flows right back into the battery. Since Unagi E500 has dual motors, both wheels make use of the electric brake. Both Unagi’s accelerator and brake levers are built with variable controls, so pushing down further increases their action. Unagi states that almost every other scooter tested is binary in their action – either all on or all off. Also other scooters use a mechanical brake as their main brake: Xiaomi Pro uses a disc brake while Ninebot MAX uses a drum brake. They only use the electric brake as secondary brake, which can’t be influenced during the ride and only be preset. Ninebot ES series scooters was equipped with electric brake and lever, I don’t know why Ninebot moved away from that system.

Folding e-Bike or e-Scooter? FIIDO D2 vs Xiaomi Scooter Pro

folding e-bike vs e-scooter - FIIDO D2 vs Xiaomi Scooter Pro

E-Scooter are currently very popular, therefore they also get a lot of bad press. Further they are illegal in some countries. So could folding e-bikes be an alternative to e-scooters? Which one is better in which situation?

I tried to come up with pros and cons using the example of FIIDO D2 and Xiaomi Scooter Pro. I use my Xiaomi Scooter Pro for my daily commute to work but I was thinking of replacing it with the FIIDO D2 folding e-bike. Here’s a comparison of them. Since there are many FIIDO versions you can find a comparison of FIIDO D1 vs FIIDO D2 vs FIIDO D3 at the bottom of this article and why I chose D2 for the comparison.

Folding e-Bike vs e-Scooter

To me it seemed FIIDO D2 provides the best offer. It offers larger tires and suspension, which should contribute to a more comfortable ride. Being foldable is definitely a puls (at least for me) to store it within your flat or office. So that’s why I chose this one to compare it to my current choice of commute – the Xiaomi Scooter Pro.

Comparison Review

There are a few similarities: you can ride at about the same max. speed (25km/h) for about the same range. This is of course only true for electric power. You can achieve a higher speed and wider range when you use FIIDO D2 pedal assisted! There are is a seat available for Xiaomi M365, but I think sitting on the e-bike provides a better driving experience. Also because of the suspension that is offered on FIIDO D2. If you are worried about the legal situation of a scooter, I think you are going “under the radar” if you are sitting on a bike.
I do expect a bit slower acceleration on the FIIDO e-bike since it provides less power than the Xiaomi Scooter Pro and further has to deal with a higher weight. This of course is only true for the electric only acceleration. Of course you can support it by pedalling.

That’s my first impression without testing the FIIDO e-bike, which I hope I can do soon. If you want to read a field test of Xiaomi Scooter Pro, check out my comparison review with the older Xiaomi M365 version: Xiaomi M365 vs Xiaomi Scooter Pro.

Field Test

Paul, a friend of mine, already did an extensive YouTube review of FIIDO D2. He is also riding his Xiaomi scooter, so I asked him about his opinion when comparing them. Here are his statements on both products, if you have further questions, let me know in the comments and I will forward them to him.

[fontawesome icon=”plus-circle” size=”14px” color=”green”] Advantage Xiaomi: The scooter is lighter and and easier to take with you, especially indoors, and therefore more comfortable to charge on the go. You can also easily carry the scooter when folded compared to the bike.

[fontawesome icon=”plus-circle” size=”14px” color=”green”] Advantage FIIDO: For Paul it is much more comfortable to ride FIIDO e-bike rather than a scooter as you can sit down. It also feels much safer as you have two large wheels and two brakes that give you a secure feeling. That is even more important when having to share a road rather than using a bike lane. It has more torque as you can support it with the pedals and a wider range as you can also operate with with human power as well.

FIIDO D2 (shifting)

FIIDO D2 - Review & Manual
FIIDO D2 – Overview

The FIIDO D2 uses an aluminum alloy frame that is, as mentioned, foldable from 130 x 40 x 110 cm to 75 x 35 x 65 cm for storage. The 19.5 kg heavy bike is available in white or dark grey. Its seat and handlebar is adjustable in size to customise seating position. As mentioned there is a “shifting version” that offers Shimano 6-speed mechanical shifting.
The 250 W brushless motor offers 7.3 Nm of torque. You can reach a max. speed of 25 km/h, of course you can ride faster when pedal assisted. FIIDO D2 offers Bluetooth so you can connect it with your smartphone to display current speed.

Comparison of FIIDO e-bikes

Basically all mentioned FIIDO bikes offer an aluminum alloy frame with 250W motor power. All of them offer a maximum speed of 25 km/h and can be operated in “pedal mode” just with human power; “electric mode” just with the power of the motor or in “moped mode” a mixture of both. They offer disk brakes on front and back wheel and are equipped with LED lights and display. There are minor differences regarding maximum payload. What differs them is the battery capacity (e.g. there are two versions of D1 with different batteries) resulting in different range and weight. The major differences are: FIIDO D3 is not foldable. FIIDO D2 offers suspension and larger wheels. Again there are two versions: shifting and non-shifting.

And they guaranteed that Boosted Rev is built for thousands and thousands of miles of daily riding as they offer a 12 month warranty for any manufacturing defects. The scooter is designed to withstand harsh road conditions and is IPX7 rated on key drivetrain components with its batteries enclosed in IP57 waterproof casing. Weight limit is 250 lbs / 113 kg, a little more than Ninebot MAX and Xiaomi Scooter Pro. Similar to its competitors Boosted Rev folds for carrying, but with a weight of 46 lb /20.9 kg it is way heavier (Ninebot MAX: 18.7 kg; Xiaomi Pro: 14,2 kg).

In my comparison Ninebot ES2 vs Xiaomi M365 I experienced a way better driving experience with M365 as it has its battery integrated in the footstep. (Ninebot ES2 has it mounted within the steering tube). That’s due to the lower center of gravity. Now all 3 scooters, Boosted Rev, Ninebot MAX & Xiaomi Scooter Pro, have their batteries built in the footstep. But with Boosted Rev’s frame design they even achieved a bit lower standing height compared to the others.

Also worth to mention, Boosted designed the frame with security in mind. To lock your scooter, simply place your lock around a standard bike rack and the metal frame for a secure hold.

Motor & Speed

Xiaomi Scooter Pro offers a 300W motor within its front wheel that offers a max. speed of 25 km/h. Ninebot MAX holds a 350W motor within the back wheel. According to Ninebot rear wheel drive offers you a better solution to acceleration, stability, and brake. MAX can go up to 30 km/h but will be limited to 25 km/h in some areas (countries) to meet legal requirements. Boosted Rev holds a 750W motor in each wheel which will get you to stunning 39 km/h with its dual wheel drive. Even climbing angles of 25% shouldn’t be a problem for Boosted Rev.

Boosted Rev Dual Wheel Drive

Battery & Range

It seems that most of the battery will be needed to boost the 2 motors as the max. range is 35km / 23mi. Xiaomi Scooter Pro performs better with a max. range of 45km / 28mi. The range of Ninebot MAX is massive: 64km / 40miles. That’s half as much again compared to the others. Ninebot MAX also has the power port built in and features 6h fast charging compared to 8,5 h for a full charge on Xiaomi Scooter Pro. Well 6h “fast charging” for MAX is super long as Boosted Rev states a charging time of just 3 hours. I really wonder how they achieve that.

Display & Controls

All three e-scooter offer headlights, rear lights and a LCD Display to check current speed and parameters. Similar on oll of them are the 3 driving modes that limit top speed. Xiaomi Scooter Pro offers 3 driving modes indicated on the display: ECO for energy saving mode (15km/h), D for standard mode (20 km/h) and S for sports mode (25 km/h). Ninebot Max offers the same modes, even with the same names. There is a 4th mode, a power assist when pushing MAX by hand. Since Boosted Rev offers a higher top speed the 3 modes are: 20 km/h, 29 km/h and 39 km/h.
While Xiaomi Scooter Pro and Ninebot MAX use a push throttle that activates the electric brakes on release Boost Rev uses a roll throttle that also controls the brakes.

Brakes & Tires

Xiaomi Scooter Pro and Ninebot MAX offer two independent brake systems. While Xiaomi Scooter Pro offers a mechanical disk brake on the back wheel, Ninebot MAX offers a mechanical drum brake on the front wheel. Booth feature a regenerative electric eABS brake on each other wheel. But you can only set the strength in advance via App which takes effect when you release the throttle. As mentioned the throttle on Boosted Rev is also used as brake lever. All you need to do is roll your thumb to the plus sign to speed up, and back to the minus sign to slow down. This way most of the braking energy can be stored again. Further Boosted Rev offers two other brake systems, three independent brakes in total. Besides the electric one there are two mechanical brakes: a mechanical disc brake on the back wheel and rear fender brake.

Xiaomi Scooter Pro use air tube tires, their benefit: great shock absorption resulting in a more comfortable ride. Of course on the downside there is a high risk of puncture and flat tires and the tubes are super hard to change. Ninebot MAX and Boosted Rev features tubeless air tires. The shock absorbing tires will offer a smooth ride while reducing the risk of getting a flat tire because of a damaged tube. There is a slight difference while Ninebot MAX is using 10″ tires, Boosted Rev is using 9″ tires.

Alfawise M1 – a cheaper alternative to Xiaomi M365?

Alfawise M1 vs Xiaomi M365 - Comparison Review

Alfawise M1 is an interesting e-scooter, it looks like Xiaomi M365, but there is a significant difference. While M365 is using air tube tires, which can puncture or deflate, Alfawise M1 is using vacuum tires (front) and honeycomb tires (back). Further it is cheaper than Xiaomi M365! Many reasons to take a closer look:

The box content of Alfawise M1  is comparable to Xiaomi M365. It comes almost fully assembled you only have to attach the handle bar, screw and wrench are included. For Xiaomi M365 there is an “EU Version” available which includes spare tires, the international version comes without extra tires. As advertised you won’t need spare tires for Alfawise M1 due to the tire design, more on that later.

Frame

The weight of Alfawise M1 is 12.5 kg, which is almost the same as Xiaomi M365 (12.7 kg). The battery on both of them is stored under the footstep which I prefer as it offers a better driving experience. That’s due to the lower center of gravity compared to Ninebot ES2 where the battery sits in the handle bar (see Ninebot ES2 vs Xiaomi M365 review). Below the footstep there’s a foldout stand to sturdy park your scooter.
Both e-scooter fold within seconds, the mechanism sits between steering bar and footstep. The crossbar connects to the cover of the back wheel to easily carry your scooter which feels well balanced. Alfawise M1 and Xiaomi M365 are made of aviation-grade aluminum and have IP54 rating, that’s means they are protected against splash water. Load factor for both of them is stated with 100 kg.

Motor & Battery

The front wheel of Alfawise M1 holds a 350W motor which is a plus of 100 W compared to Xiaomi M365 (250W). Max. speed is stated with 25km/h which is comparable same as 15% gradient stated for both of them. Both e-scooter offer two riding modes: Standard Mode and Energy Saving mode where the max. speed is limited.

The built in battery of Xiaomi M365 offers a capacity of 280 Wh. Alfawise M1 offers a larger capacity battery with 350 Wh. Both scooter state a max. range of 30km and about 6hrs charging time. The 30km stated range of M365 turned out to be about 25km in real life. I assume the larger battery of Alfawise M1 gets you closer to 30km, but I couldn’t test it so far. As mentioned the battery sits below the footstep of the scooter.

LEDs & Display

Compared to Xiaomi M365 the Alfawise M1 holds a display which shows the scooter’s speed. After testing Ninebot ES2 the display seemed to be very convenient and I was missing this item on my Xiaomi M365. The display of Alfawise M1 shows current speed, the selected mode and battery status. Xiaomi M365 has 4 LEDs instead of a display that indicates battery status. If the lowest one is green instead of white it means you are in eco mode.
Alfawise M1 and Xiaomi M365 have integrated LED headlight and rear light, that also works as brake light. Even though the folding lock mechanism of Alfawise M1 looks very similar to Xiaomi M365 it doesn’t have a bell attached. A bell is a legal requirement in many countries, but you can easily attach one.

Tires & Brakes

In this category you can find the main difference between booth e-scooter. The front tire of Alfawise M1 is a vacuum tire with the same quality as car tires that should be 40% more puncture resistant than pneumatic tires. (The new Ninebot Max offers a comparable technology).  The rear tire is a (hidden) honeycomb tire that is sturdy and also solves the problem of getting flat tires. Still it provides good shock absorption compared to solid rubber tires (as found on Ninebot ES series).
Xiaomi M365 is fitted with tube air tires instead. They offer advantages and disadvantages. While they provide excellent shock absorption they of course can deflate or puncture.
Alfawise M1 and Xiaomi M365 tires are all 8.5″ in size.

Alfawise M1 offers vacuum tires (front) and honeycomb tires (back)

Both e-scooter offer two separated brake systems: Integrated in the front wheel there is an eABS, regenerative anti-lock braking system. When you release the accelerator lever, the front wheel slowly brakes and the generated energy flows back into battery. The back wheel holds a 120mm disk brake which is activated with the brake handle on the steering bar.

Review – My two cents

On the paper the Alfawise M1 seems to outperform Xiaomi M365 in every aspect. It has a larger battery and stronger motor, although the max. speed and max. range stated is the same (25 km/h / 30km). But I have to state that in my test I couldn’t reach 30km on my Xiaomi M365. Alfawise M1 offers a display that shows current speed which is very convenient. And then there’s the tire factor. Even tough Xiaomi M365 is very reliable and very comfortable to ride, there’s the issue with punctured and flat tires. And this problem seems to be tackled by Alfawise M1 very well. It’s interesting that they use two different types. A tubeless tired on the front that seems to have less risk of puncture but still provides good shock absorption. And a honeycomb tire on the back that has no issues with punctures but might be just a bit worse in terms of shock absorption. But on the back-wheel that doesn’t seem to be that needed. And to top it off Alphawise M1 is way cheaper than Xiaomi M365.

It seems Alfawise M1 is an interesting alternative to Xiaomi M365. I hope I can test it soon to provide you with real life experience if it stands up to the specs on paper. I complied this article as I wanted to get an overview of Alfawise M1 to see if it is worth testing. It definitely is, so I thought I share the infos with you if you want to make a decision. I’ll add my real life experience as soon as possible.

New e-Scooter Segway Max released at CES

New e-Scooter "Segway Max" to be released at CES

There was a rumor going on Segway will release new e-scooter during CES. The new model called “Segway Max” also addresses scooter-share companies like Lime and Bird. This new scooter is supposed to be more comfortable and longer lasting than other models. It was reported that Lime had some problems with their fleet (Segway by Ninebot ES models). Bird is using the Xiaomi M365, which is actually also produced by Ninebot.

So will this be the new ultimate e-Scooter to rule them all? It was also reported that the new Segway Max will be “highly customizable”. In my field test Xiaomi M365 vs Ninebot ES2 I learned that Ninebot ES2 offers the better features, but Xiaomi prevails because of the better driving experience. I hope Segway combines the best features for a new model that outperforms them both.

Update I

New photos were found online showing the possible new Segway Max e-Scooter. Uber-competitor Lyft is expanding its e-scooter rental business and seems to be interested in deploying the new Segway Max. At first sight the renderings show a Xiaomi M365 but there are some differences like the large display on the nadle bar.

Update II

The new e-scooter won’t be branded Segway but Ninebot Max! Do you think the renderings look like Xiaomi Scooter M365 Pro? Well the new Ninebot Max is announced to be “the perfect combination of upgrades from the M365 and the ES4”. Therefor I did a comparison: Ninebot Max vs Xiaomi Scooter Pro.

E-Scooter Overview

E-scooter are getting very popular and are a convenient gadget to quickly travel around the city. Included on the comparison are the Ninebot Scooters: Ninebot MAX, “Ninebot by Segway” ES1 and E2. (Ninebot ES4 is an ES2 with additional battery, ES3 is an ES1 with battery). Xiaomi offers three models as well: Xiaomi Scooter Pro, Xiaomi M365 and Xiaomi M187 Youth Edition. Recently Boosted (producer of Boosted Board) announced their scooter Boosted Rev.
